Lady Vikes out in two in District play

ZILLAH - The Mabton girls softball team ended its season this past Saturday with two losses in the District tourney.

In the opener the Lady Vikes lost to LaSalle 12-10, as the Lightning pushed across six runs in the fourth inning.

Sparked by a two-run double by Jessica Orozco, Mabton rallied with four runs in the fifth to make it a 6-4 game.

The Lady Vikes kept hitting around and actually took a 10-8 lead in the sixth, before pitching control troubles got the best of Mabton hurler Alida Mendoza. LaSalle struck for four in the top of the seventh to take the win.

In their second game at Districts, Mabton was defeated by Lyle 10-5 in a loser-out contest.

Lyle posted an early 6-3 lead over Mabton and never looked back. The Lady Vikes' deficit grew to 10-3 before a two-run rally in the seventh proved too little, too late.

Mabton struggled at the plate, according to Coach Jesus Sustaita, coming up with just five hits in the loss.

"We had a great season, the girls just came up a little short at Districts," he said. "We just have to work on our batting and fundamentals next year because we'll be moving up to A (Class 1A)."

This year's squad finished its season with an overall record of 11-11

Four Mabton players were named to the league's All-Opponent team: Alida Mendoza, Jessica Orozco, Celida Diaz and Mayra Diaz.
