Plesha leads S'side into District semi's

YAKIMA - With just the semifinals and finals remaining today, the dust has pretty well settled on the Mid-Valley League's District tourney.

Among those still standing today are four Sunnyside tennis players, led by ace Danny Plesha, who cruised during the first round of District play with a 6-0, 6-0 win over West Valley's Cyrus Bricel.

The other Grizzly boys advancing to play today and, like Plesha, with a Regional berth already in hand is the No. 1 doubles team of Tyler Thompson and Jake Wavrin.

After drawing a bye in the first round, the duo defeated a team from Ellensburg 6-0, 6-1 and outlasted a team from Hanford 6-4, 6-3 to advance to today's semifinals.

The rest of the boys teams failed to advance out of this past Saturday's competition, but all managed to win at least one match in the process.

Playing varsity for the first time all year, Sunnyside's Anthony Gomez lost his first match 6-0, 6-0. Though that effectively ended his run for the season, Gomez did play and win a consolation match 7-5, 6-3 over an Ellensburg opponent.

In No. 2 doubles, Sunnyside's Mitchell Sanchez and Hunter Van deGraaf lost their first match 6-3, 6-3 before ending their season with a 6-2, 6-1 consolation win over Wapato opponents.

In No. 3 doubles, Justin Snyder and Jacob Kresse lost their first match at Districts, 6-3, 7-5, to Wapato opponents.

Snyder and Kresse then rallied for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 consolation win over a team from Prosser.

In girls play, the only Lady Grizzly to advance to the semifinals and to Regionals was Jerika Martinez, a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Wapato's Marilu Cruz.

In second singles, Sunnyside's Jessica Gudino split her two matches, a 6-3, 6-2 loss to West Valley's Shae Oswalt, followed by a 6-2, 6-1 win over an opponent from Selah.

Sunnyside's No. 1 doubles team of Regina Mendes and Helen Shuttleworth had won just two matches all year. Yet at Districts they won their first two matches, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 over a team from Wapato and 6-3, 6-2 over a duo from Prosser.

The girls' season ended in Saturday's quarterfinals, however, as they lost 6-2, 6-1 to a team from Ellensburg.

Sunnyside's other two girls doubles teams of Capri Miles/Hannah Paulakis and Addy Hernandez/Gayle Hansen both went 0-2 on Saturday.

In other MVL tennis news, Plesha was named all-league first team and Thompson was named second team. Wavrin and Snyder were selected honorable mention.

Martinez was a first-team all-league selection for the girls, while Mendes and Gudino were honorable mention.
