Hipolito Mendez Sr., 83 of Sunnyside passed away Saturday, May 27, 2006, at Hillcrest Manor in Sunnyside.

He was born Aug. 13, 1922 to Sixto and Magdalena (Perez) Mendez in Eagle Pass, Texas. He also received his education in Eagle Pass. He married Hermina Menchaca in Texas. In 1947 they moved to Sunnyside. Hipolito worked at Hanford as a pipe fitter for 15 years. He semi-retired and worked for Herman Roskamp for 30 years. On Sept. 2, 1965 he married Maria Gonzalez in Sunnyside.

Hipolito loved music, singing, dancing, fishing and farming. He cherished time spent with his family, friends and especially his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside.

Hipolito is survived by his wife, Maria Mendez of Sunnyside; six children, Magdalena (Patrick) Perez, Abel (Staci) Mendez, all of Yakima, Hipolito "Paul" (Paula) Mendez and Gene Mendez, all of Sunnyside, Teresa (Sam) Garcia of Prosser and Ester (James) Green of Kent; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Martin Mendez, one grandson, Eddie Vela and one sister.

Viewing and visitation will be held Tuesday, May 30, 2006, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 6 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sunnyside. Burial will be at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside, WA.
