A special Veterans Day program is slated for Saturday, Nov. 11, at Sunnyside's Lower Valley Memorial Gardens.
Because it's customary for Veterans Day to be observed at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, the program begins at 11 a.m.
The service will take place at the new War Veterans Memorial located at the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens cemetery just north of Sunnyside.
"Veterans Day is about remembering the services and sacrifices that all veterans have given to our nation," says event coordinator Greg Schlieve. "Because of their service, we live in a free country."
Sunnyside Police Patrolman Jose Navarro, who did two tours in Iraq and received four purple hearts, will be the featured guest speaker.
"With the war on terrorism presently being fought on two main fronts, we thought that Patrolman Navarro's thoughts would be of special interest to everyone," explains Schlieve.
Other speakers and special guests will include Sunnyside VFW Post # 3482 Commander Bob Ingram, American Legion Post #73 Commander Walter George and Dave Rowland, Commander of Am-Vet Post #3733.
The event will feature a 21-gun salute, the playing of Taps and a final tribute.
"We encourage everyone to come and join us on Saturday, Nov. 11, as we gather to celebrate and honor those who are trying to make this a safer place for all people to live," said Schlieve, adding that those who attend need to dress warmly and are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
The Sunnyside VFW Ladies Auxiliary will provide lunch to all who attend following the ceremony at the Sunnyside Post, located at 615 North Avenue.
