YAKIMA - Splitting the first two regulation games, as well as the two Baker contests, the Sunnyside High School girls bowling team edged Selah last Thursday based on total pinfall.
The victory squared Sunnyside's record at 1-1 on the season, as the Lady Grizzlies were defeated by Moses Lake two days prior by a 4-0 score.
In besting the Selah Vikings last Thursday at Yakima's Minda Lanes, Sunnyside tallied a total pinfall of 1,619. Selah's four-game total was 1,611.
Selah rode Whitney Jennerjohn's 199 in the opening game to top the Lady Grizzlies 697-664. Coupled with Kassandra Foster's 167, the 160 and 151 efforts by Sunnyside's Kayla Coder and Michelle Williams were negated.
In game two, the Lady Grizzlies matched their 664 first game performance, but it stood up for a win as the Vikings tallied only a 651. Veronica Uribe powered Sunnyside to the second game victory, rolling a 164.
Sunnyside forged a 2-1 lead on the Vikings by claiming the first Baker game, 146-112. The Baker format calls for each member of the five-girl squad to alternate their shots throughout the 10 frames.
Selah won the second Baker contest by a 151-145 score to knot the match at 2-2.
The Lady Grizzlies were deemed the winners, though, based on total pinfall for the four games.
In JV action against Selah, the junior varsity Lady Grizzlies were upended, 4-0. Marisela Prado had the top two-game series for Sunnyside on efforts of 115-134. The Selah JV's top bowler on the afternoon was Heather Preston, who had games of 143-149.
In last week's season opening home match against the visiting Moses Lake Chieftains, Sunnyside fell by 707-581 and 687-658 scores in the two regulation games. Moses Lake won the two Baker games by scores of 137-107 and 146-121.
The Chieftains' top bowler on the day was Susan Krona, who rolled games of 173-155.
Sunnyside's top performer against Moses Lake was Williams. She tossed a team high 147 in the opening game, adding a team best 164 in the second contest.
Raven Canales, in JV action against Moses Lake, had the top performance for Sunnyside. She rolled games of 133-137. The two JV squads split the four games, but the junior varsity Chieftains were victorious based on total pinfall (1,364-1,328).
