Lions power past SHS Lady Grizzlies

KENNEWICK - The trio of Maria Bessey, Katie Horton and Brittany Bergsson did in the Sunnyside High School girls bowling team yesterday afternoon at Kennewick's Celebrity Lanes.

The three Kennewick bowlers rolled two-game series of 386, 364 and 352, respectively, to power the Lions to a 4-0 sweep of the visiting Lady Grizzlies. Tuesday's loss dropped Sunnyside's record to 1-4 on the year.

Despite sustaining the shutout, Sunnyside got three pretty decent efforts from seniors Jackie Francis and Veronica Uribe and junior Michele Williams.

Francis tossed games of 167-175 for a team high 342 two-game series. Uribe added performances of 166-143 (309), and Williams rebounded from an opening 123 game to roll a team best 181 in the second contest.

Kennewick took control from the outset, opening the match with a convincing 816-684 victory. Bessey and Horton had games of 191 and 176, respectively, in leading the Lions to the first game win. In the losing effort, Francis and Uribe posted efforts of 167 and 166.

Game two was much tighter, but in the end the Lions prevailed, 771-729. Bergsson's 203 was the difference in the contest.

Kennewick went on to win both Baker games by scores of 183-128 and 178-143. The Baker format calls for each member of the five-girl squads to alternate taking shots throughout the 10 frames.

The SHS bowling team is out of action until next Tuesday, Nov. 28, when it hosts Pasco.

In JV action yesterday, Kennewick took three of four games to secure the match victory. Sunnyside's junior varsity squad averted the shutout by winning the last Baker game, 130-111.

The Sunnyside JV's top performers yesterday were Chelsea Garcia (144-127) and Raven Canales (126-110). Kennewick's junior varsity was led by Katie Yancey (137-203) and Maura Tomsinski (172-143).
