Ringing up their first win of the season this past Saturday, the Sunnyside Grid Kid "A" team had a reason to celebrate. Holding the West Valley offense scoreless and controlling the ball and clock on the offensive side, the Sunnyside team walked away with 12-0 win.
Sunnyside struck first early in the game with a 40-yard sweep by Lorenzo Garza to open up the scoring. Sunnyside and West Valley, for the remainder of the first half, traded possession of the pigskin as they were unable to get any offense going.
Opening the third quarter Sunnyside put together a clock eating drive that culminated in a 5-yard touchdown run for Eric Sanchez that closed out the scoring for the rest of the game.
Defense came up big for Sunnyside as West Valley struggled to put together a sustained drive.
Playing outstanding defense for Sunnyside were Fernando Madrigal, Ryan Hernandez, Marcos Yanez and Rigo Valdez who kept constant pressure on the quarterback and kept the sweeps from reaching the outside corners.
Offensively the offensive line held their blocks and the running backs were patient and let the blocks develop.
In "B" team action the Sunnyside "B" Black team came back from an early first half 13-0 deficit to stun Toppenish 26-13 and pull out the win. No other information was available from the game.
The "B" Red team suffered yet another close 12-6 loss.
