Herbert Dale Hendricks, 87, of Mabton passed away Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at Emerald Care in Wapato.

Herb was born on Feb. 15, 1919 to James and Daisy (Bryner) Hendricks in Sterling, Colo. He was the third born of eight children. He went to school in Colorado until the 11th grade. In 1936 the family moved from Colorado to Washington. They purchased a farm in Mabton.

On May 29, 1943 Herb married Etta Eileen Upton in Yakima by a justice of the peace. Herb and Etta purchased the family farm after they were married. In March 1956 their home burnt to the ground. They lived in a cabin in the hop field next to their farm. By August they had rebuilt their home and moved back in, and they lived there until 2004. They raised four children on the family farm, Mary, Allen, Sharon and Beverly. Herb was a very successful hog farmer until his retirement in 1990, and he also enjoyed cows, horses, and goats. He grew a few row crops such as mint, corn, hay and asparagus.

Herb is survived by his wife of 63 years, Etta; his children, Mary Gefre-Link of Kennewick, Allan (Rhonda) Hendricks, of Mabton, Sharon (Joe Salinas) Zecchino of Granger, Beverly (Paul) Jones of Yakima; his 23 Grandchildren, Mark (Carolyn) Gefre, Amber (Casey) Johnson, Chandra Green, Jenna Black, Matthew (Amanda) Zecchino, of Yakima, Christine (Leonard) Crouch of Zillah. Loretta (Dennis) Remley of Gilbert, Ariz., Cher (James) Morrow of Sunnyside, Amy (Juan) Hendricks of Mabton, Jason (Christy) Gefre of Hermiston, Ore., Tyler (Megan) Gefre of Kennewick, Jimmy Salinas of Granger, Breanne (Donny) Anderson of Station Island, N.Y. and Staff Sergeant Ramon Black, who is currently in Iraq; his 25 great-grandchildren, Benjamin Isaiah, Jared, Jordyn, Alexis, Ian, Hunter, Colton, Nate, Alec, Matthew, Xavier, Blanca, Deegan, Conner, Cody, Dylan, Taylor, Kaylynn, Zachury, Quintin, Zackary, Steven, Tresa, and one more on the way. He is also survived by two sisters, Violet Warren of Yakima and Ella Mae White of Everett and one brother, Jake Hendricks (Betty) Kennewick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Clarence; two brothers, Leland Hendricks and Clifford Hendricks; and one sister, Velma Galland; sisters-in-law, Mabel Hendricks and Thadene Hendricks; and brother-in-law, Ernie Galland.

Viewing and visitation will be held Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside. Funeral services for Herb will be held Monday Oct. 16, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home. Interment will be at Mabton cemetery.

Granddad, "Look what you started," we will forever miss you.
