Velma Marie Thornton, 79, of Grandview died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006, at Hillcrest Manor.
She was born May 20, 1927 in Thayer, Kan. to Ira Ralph and Netti (Martin) Haviland. On April 8, 1945 she married Billy Everett Thornton in Neodesha, Kan. They settled in the Yakima Valley in 1978, living in Grandview and Mabton.
She is survived by two sons, Billy Wayne Thornton and his wife, Lisa, of Reno, Nev., Kenneth Dale Thornton and his wife, Sharon, of Grandview, two daughters, Linda Louise (Thornton) Robertson and husband, Thorn, of Montecito, Calif. and Lois Elaine (Thornton) Stewart and husband, Larry, of Prosser; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie (Thornton) Dalke and husband, Kent, of Sunnyside; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 1989; and son, Larry Gene Thornton, in 1981.
Viewing and visitation will be held Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Grandview. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at 10 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Grandview. Burial will be held at Mabton Cemetery. Those wishing to honor Mrs. Thornton's memory may contribute to the Grandview Salvation Army. Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
