The wait is over for the eight contestants in the 2006-07 Miss Sunnyside Pageant. Eight wonderful girls competed for four spots on the court.
After weeks of hard work and preparation, Taylor Gardner was named Miss Sunnyside and her 2006-07 court will be first princess Vanessa Van Boven, second princess Brittney Amaro and third princess Cassie Herndon.
"That was the most liberating experience I've ever had in my life," Gardner said when asked what it was like to win the competition. "I would definitely do it again."
"I'm really shocked," Van Boven said. "The competition was fierce. I feel very blessed. This year is just going to be incredible."
Saturday's pageant, keeping with its theme "Under the Sea," started with the girls being introduced as they danced to the sounds of Caribbean music. Once the contestants were introduced the 2005-06 court came out and were introduced as well.
Next came the freestyle competition, where each contestant came out and told the audience a little bit about themselves and what they planned to do if named Miss Sunnyside.
The eight contestants entertained the audience in the talent portion of the show. There was a reading of a poem in French, singing, comedy and dancing.
Amaro earned herself an ear-shattering applause when she finished singing Somebody's Hero. Gardner drew laughs with her humorous monologue about the tooth fairy being exposed.
Yeraldi Espino choreographed her dance to a mix of Latin music and Vanessa Van Boven wowed the crowed with her partner Matt Massey as they danced to Crazy Little Thing Called Love.
After the talent portion came the evening gown competition and then the 2005-06 Miss Sunnyside Court made their final walk and said good-bye.
Brittney Amaro was named Miss Congeniality and Yeraldi Espino was picked as most photogenic.
2005-06 Miss Sunnyside Kerri Urrutia and first princess Corrin Veiga said they had bitter sweet feelings about their reign being over.
They said they were both relieved but added they had some good times.
