The pass-and-catch tandem of Jonathan Hysell and James Sanchez burned the visiting Davis High School freshman football team for two touchdowns last Friday afternoon.
Coupled with a 2-yard TD run by tailback Buddha Palomarez, Sunnyside's freshman squad defeated the visiting Pirates, 20-6. The victory was Sunnyside's first of the season, following a pair of losses to the Grandview and Wenatchee freshman football squads.
Hysell, who threw for about 170 yards, completed both of his touchdown tosses to Sanchez in the second quarter. The first TD hook-up was a 32-yarder, with Sanchez hauling in a 27-yard scoring strike before the half, as well.
Davis got on the scoreboard in the third stanza on an 80-yard kickoff return. Sunnyside's third score of the afternoon also came in the third quarter, when Palomarez dove into the end zone from the 2-yard line.
Grizzly kicker Danny Almeida was successful on two point-after attempts.
Defensively, according to Sunnyside Coach Darren Mezger, defensive end Victor Rios had a big game, recording a team high four sacks.
The Sunnyside freshman grid team is scheduled to host the Kennewick freshmen at 4 p.m. this coming Friday on the varsity field, prior to the 7:30 p.m. varsity game between the same two schools.
