Mike Wallace narrowed the gap slightly yesterday in his primary contest with Rand Elliott for the County Commissioner, District 3, seat.
Wallace, of Grandview, initially trailed Elliott, a Moxee resident, by 25 votes when the county auditor's office released the first tabulation following the Tuesday, Sept. 19, Republican primary.
The county tallied an additional 83 ballots from within the third district late yesterday and Wallace closed the gap by two votes.
Of equal importance, Wallace trimmed the losing margin to less than one percent at .94. A margin of one-half percent (.50) or less triggers an automatic recount.
Both candidates told the Daily Sun News yesterday they would not seek a recount if the margin was above the one-half percent threshold.
The auditor's office originally noted there were countywide between 13,000 and 14,000 ballots yet to count. Officials tabulated about 900 of those yesterday.
The auditor's office will count additional ballots each afternoon at 4:30 p.m. until the tally is complete. The election will be certified on Sept. 29.
