WAPATO - The Sunnyside girls soccer team rallied from a 3-1 halftime deficit last night to down 2A Wapato 4-3 and claim its first win of the season.
The 3A Lady Grizzlies scored in the first four minutes of the match when Michelle Galvan received a cross from teammate Audra Hays and knocked it into the goal to put her team up 1-0.
It was all Wapato after that, though, as Sunnyside again experienced first half struggles and surrendered three goals to trail 3-1 at the midway mark.
"I explained to the girls it doesn't matter what league a team plays in, everyone wants to win and you're going to have to earn it," said Coach Kathy Jolliff.
The recharged Lady Grizzlies pressured the ball better in the second half, and it soon showed on the scoreboard.
"We started the second half with more determination and tough play," Jolliff recalled.
About 10 minutes into the second half, Galvan delivered a crossing pass to Jacqueline Roberts, who headed it into the back of the Wapato net to make it a 3-2 game.
Ten minutes later, Sunnyside found the equalizer when Sasha Castro led Leslie Jones with a pass for a goal and a 3-3 game.
The match remained knotted until about the 68th minute, when Galvan intercepted a Wapato goal kick about 25 yards out, dribbled a couple of times and drilled a rocket into the Wapato net for the game winner.
"Hopefully this will prove to the kids that they have the ability to make a comeback," Jolliff said. "But we need to work on figuring out how to play better in the first half like we do in the second half."
Sunnyside (0-4, 1-6) travels to Eastmont this Saturday.
