KENNEWICK - After sustaining a pair of shutouts in its first two games of the season, the Sunnyside High School JV football team broke through yesterday and got on the scoreboard.
Playing at Kennewick against the junior varsity Lions, Sunnyside lit up the board in the first quarter on a 47-yard breakaway run by Mario Sandana. He finished the game with 104 rushing yards on just 12 carries. Saldana, from his outside linebacker's spot on defense, also recorded a quarterback sack yesterday and was credited with five tackles.
Sunnyside's second touchdown of the game came in the third quarter, on a 9-yard toss from QB Michael Rodriguez to Matt Salinas.
Rodriguez finished the junior varsity contest completing 3-of-9 passes for 27 yards.
Despite posting the two touchdowns against Kennewick, the Grizzly JV absorbed a 55-12 loss Monday afternoon.
Defensively for Sunnyside, linebacker Sam Bardell had a team high six tackles.
The Grizzly JV is scheduled to host the Kamiakin junior varsity squad next Monday, Oct. 2, at 5 p.m.
