A "bantering" episode in a classroom at Sierra Vista Middle School yesterday ended with one 14-year-old student injured and another, also 14, taken to the juvenile detention facility in Yakima.
"As I understand it, two students were verbally bantering, not teasing, not arguing, and then one punched the other and he fell and hit his head on a table," said Sgt. Joey Glossen, who responded to the assault report.
"The teacher was in the classroom, but the students were sort of in transition, getting stuff out of their cubby and sort of whispering/bantering," said Glossen. "Because it happened in a classroom, the student was taken to juvenile."
The injured student was taken by ambulance to Sunnyside Community Hospital, where he was treated and released.
