Sunnyside temperatures warmer than normal

Sunny skies during the month of March brought warmer than normal temperatures for this time of year.

That's according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which recently reported that the March climate here was nearly a full degree, 0.9, warmer than normal.

A federal service based out of Pendleton, Ore., NOAA reported that the average temperature during March was 47.1 degrees. Sunnyside's high temperatures during the month averaged a tad under 60 degrees (59.9), which was 1.4 degrees above normal.

The highest temperature reached was 78 degrees on March 18. Low temperatures averaged 34.3 degrees, which was 0.4 degrees above normal.

The lowest was 24 degrees, on March 2. There were 10 days with the low temperature below 32 degrees.

Precipitation totaled 0.37 inches during March, which was 0.26 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation-at least .01 inch-was received on five days with the heaviest, 0.16 inches reported on March 27.

Total precipitation this year in Sunnyside has reached 1.35 inches, three-quarters of an inch below normal. In the past six months, the total precipitation at Sunnyside has been 4.72 inches, which is 0.04 inches below normal.

The warming trend is expected to continue, as the outlook for April from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center calls for above normal temperatures and near normal precipitation. Normal highs for Sunnyside during April are 66.7 degrees and normal lows are 39.2 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation average is 0.53 inches.
