Two teens arrested on gun charges

A response to a shots fired call in the area of Columbia and Taylor avenues, in Sunnyside, netted two arrests yesterday for the Sunnyside Police Department.

Justin Cavasos, 17, of Zillah, and Jesus Fernandez, 14, of Sunnyside, were both charged with second degree unlawful possession of a firearm.

Cavasos was also charged with possession of a stolen firearm. Police linked a firearm stolen from Kittitas County to Cavasos at a house in the 800 block of Taylor Avenue.

Local police say Fernandez has a previous conviction on unlawful possession of a firearm and also a conviction of theft of a firearm.

Officers were originally dispatched to the scene to respond to the shots fired call. Witnesses in the area described a group of males dressed down in gang attire leaving the area on foot.

When the first Sunnyside officer arrived at the scene, police say that Fernandez took off running and was located a short distance away.

In searching the area, police found a loaded semi-automatic pistol along the path that Fernandez had taken.

Both Cavasos and Fernandez were transferred and booked into the juvenile detention facility in Yakima.
