The 1B Sunnyside Christian High School girls softball team broke out the bats for a big third inning and held on for a 12-9 non-league win over 2A Grandview yesterday.
After Grandview batted around to plate three runs in the top of the third, the host Lady Knights trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the third.
That's when Sunnyside Christian broke out the bats and broke open the contest with seven runs in its half of the third.
The Lady Knights collected six of their 13 hits for the game in the pivotal third, including back-to-back doubles by Naomi denHoed and Hilary Bosma. Teammate Jamie Sveen delivered a two-run single to help spark the rally.
Though Lady Knight pitcher Tori Van Wingerden surrendered 10 hits for nine Greyhound runs, the hurler gave up just one extra base hit. Sunnyside Christian batters delivered five extra base hits for the game.
Bosma was 2-for-3 for the game, while Naomi denHoed was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Brittany denHoed was 2-for-4. Abby Bangs was 3-for-4 at the plate.
Coach Sandy Harris praised her team's performance at the plate and in the field in keeping Grandview to one extra-base hit.
"Our first baseman Jackie Roberts did a great job in handling some difficult tosses," said Harris. "I felt that our defense worked really well."
