MABTON - Already shorthanded because of eligibility issues, the Mabton High School football team had to cancel its season opener against the Pasco JV team scheduled for this coming Friday because of injuries.
The Vikings line-up was down to 14 players eligible to suit up, when injuries took their toll.
"We had some very untimely injuries and getting kids back into the swing of things this fall has been more challenging than usual," said Athletic Director Denny Brown.
To give the players some game experience before what is now the opener at home against Warden on Sept. 7, Mabton has scheduled a home scrimmage with Highland High School on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 5 p.m. Brown said the scrimmage will be very informal, with coaches on the field working with the players. The public is invited to watch free of charge.
Brown said the Vikings should be at nearly full strength for the Warden contest.
