YVCC to open doors to new Workforce Center with "Grape to Glass Gala"

GRANDVIEW - Yakima Valley Community College Grandview campus is planning a day long celebration of the opening of its Workforce Education Center on Saturday, Sept.15, culminating with the classy "Grape to Glass Gala" that evening.

The "Grape to Glass Gala" is slated to take place from 6 to 9 p.m. in the new teaching winery facility and will feature a bevy of activities for guests to enjoy.

Not only will there be wine tasting and hors d'oeuvres, but Master Sommelier Angelo Tavernaro will host a wine seminar. There will also be live music and a silent auction, featuring numerous items donated by local businesses.

Funds raised from the "Grape to Glass Gala" will be used for scholarships for students training in the facility.

According to Trent Ball, YVCC Grandview campus Agriculture Program Chairman and Viticulture and Enology Instructor, the opportunities are two-fold.

"It's a great opportunity for us to showcase the facility that's been developed for the community, and it's also an opportunity to support the students who will be entering the program."

Tickets for the gala are $25 and can be purchased by calling 509-574-4753 or through the website at www.yvcc.edu/wine. Tickets will also be available at the door.

The facility is located at 114 Grandridge Road in the former Safeway building, right next to the post office.

Earlier that day, visitors will have a chance to tour the new teaching winery from noon to 3 p.m.

The Allied Health Program and Vineyard and Winery Technology program will be housed in the building.

Ball said that the winery portion of the building features the teaching winery, as well as a laboratory, classroom, tasting room, barrel and case storage, and two start-up winery spaces.

"Having the two incubator spaces is unique to any other wine program in the nation; combining the academic and business environment in one setting," Ball said.

From 1 to 5 p.m. on Sept. 15, YVCC is hosting the Great Grandview Grape Stomp at the facility, which will also feature live music and wine tasting, as well as the stomp.
