Carl Edwin Malmgren, Jr., 69, of Pasco passed away at his home on Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. Carl's wife, daughters and sisters were by his side at the time he passed.
He was born Jan. 12, 1939 in Klamath Falls, Ore. to Carl Edwin Malmgren, Sr. and Vinnie Viola Malmgren (Briscoe). They moved in 1944 to the family ranch in Outlook, where his grandparents homesteaded. They raised cattle, sugar beets, carrots, corn, asparagus and alfalfa. Carl attended Outlook Grade School. He graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1957. Immediately after graduation, he entered the Air Force and was a jet mechanic, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, as well as Montana and Texas. After serving three years, he returned home to help out on the family ranch after his father had back surgery. Over the years, he worked at the U & I Sugar Beet Factory, Prosser Pak and Milne's. After 20 years as a millwright at Hanford, he retired in 2001.
He married Carla Jeane Elstad in 1970. They had two daughters, Rachelle and Tonja and one son, Shawn.
They divorced in 1987. He met the love of his life, Jane E. Sly, at work and they were married in 1995. The made their home in Pasco.
Carl was an avid outdoorsman. He had a great passion for hunting, fishing and gardening with his dog, Buddy, at his side. He was a self-taught builder. He loved working with his hands. His flower gardens made many smile and he enjoyed sharing the gifts from his garden with family, friends and neighbors. He loved being a host and was proud to show off his latest project.
Carl was a wonderful family man. He loved attending his children and grandchildren's school activities. He also enjoyed family get-togethers, camping trips and huckleberry picking. Some of the highlights were braving the snowstorm of 1989 to cheer on Rachelle at the State basketball tournament, enjoying Tonja's college graduation, sturgeon fishing at IIlawaco and attending the annual Briscoe family reunion in Chiloquin, Ore. every Memorial Day weekend.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jane of Pasco; his daughters, Rachelle Wiley (Jason) of Prosser and Tonja Tosh (Jeff) of Othello; one son, Shawn Malmgren of Yakima; his sisters, Phyllis Krueger (Dick) of Snohomish and Donna deGraaf (Fred) of Outlook; stepdaughters, Donna Hubbs (Steve) of Walla Walla and Cheryl Sutliff (Phil) of Kennewick; his grandchildren, Jessica, Christopher, Anthony, Brady, Ashley, Kara and KC; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; one aunt, Jean Briscoe; and his best friends, Gene and Patty Luke.
