NACHES - It wasn't the best orchestrated effort they'll most likely turn in this season, still, the Bickleton High School boys basketball team came away with a 37-29 road victory last Friday.
Playing against the Naches Rangers JV squad, the Pirates varsity turned to seniors Eric Hess and Cody Loomis to get the job done. The duo combined for 29 of Bickleton's 37 points. Hess also came away with a game high 24 rebounds.
"It was ragged," Bickleton Coach Rick Palmer said of Friday's non-league contest. "We have some work to do."
One of the reasons Palmer believes his Pirates weren't in sync was the absence of 6'3" Edgar Molina. In Bickleton's season opener last Tuesday, Molina tossed in 16 points.
Molina, said Palmer, missed Friday's game because of a rolled ankle. There's a possibility, Palmer added, that Molina will be back this coming Tuesday for the rematch against Columbia Basin Secondary, the Moses Lake area team the Pirates knocked off by a 64-54 score in the season opener last week.
"Columbia Basin is a lot quicker and taller than the Naches team we played Friday night," said Palmer. "We'll have to play a lot better than we did Friday if we're going to have a chance tomorrow."
In the win over the class 1A Rangers junior varsity, the 1B Pirates limited the home team to just six points in the opening half. Palmer said the shorter Naches players suffered from a lack of rebounds, "...plus they didn't shoot very well."
Bickleton opened a 24-10 lead on the Rangers heading into the final quarter of play, but had to hold on down the stretch as Naches outscored the visitors by a 19-13 margin in the final period.
