Lady Knights victory over Yakama Tribal dampened by DeSales loss

The Sunnyside Christian girls basketball team was victorious over Yakama Tribal last Friday night and suffered a non-league loss to 2B DeSales on Saturday.

During Friday's game against Yakama Tribal, Melanie VanWingerden had the team high of six rebounds.

The Lady Knights didn't allow the Eagles to score much, and held the upper hand throughout the game. The 64-6 win for the Lady Knights kept them in first place in the girls 1B division.

Unfortunately, Saturday's game against DeSales was another story.

"They are good," said Sunnyside Christian High School coach Al Smeenk.

The 2B Irish are undefeated in the season. They are currently ranked fifth in the State in their division.

Knowing that, Smeenk was impressed with the Lady Knights' game. "The game was much closer than the score reflects," he said of the 55-40 loss.

He reported a team high of 15 rebounds for Andrea Schutt. "They are a very aggressive team," Smeenk noted of the Irish.

Overall rebounds for the Lady Knights were 29 to the Irish's 31. "The Irish were in full court, man-to-man defense and they work very hard ... especially in their home gym," he said.

Smeenk said he was proud of the fact that the Sunnyside

Christian girls had three steals and allowed no steals for the Irish.

"We only had 15 turnovers in the game," he stated.

The Lady Knights have been working hard on reducing turnovers and the hard work showed during Saturday's game. "They did very well," said Smeenk.

"They played a good team and they didn't allow any steals."

The Lady Knights (10-1, 17-3) will travel to Goldendale for District competition this Friday, Feb. 9.
