ZILLAH - Needing an extra day to finish up the 171-lb. weight class seedings, Mabton's Adrian Magana defeated Goldendale's Darren Stelter yesterday (Monday).
Stelter wrestled five matches at the class A District tournament in Zillah last Saturday. He was prevented by WIAA regulations from wrestling a sixth bout, which necessitated yesterday's match-up with Magana. The Viking grappler now enters Regional competition as this area's No. 3 seed, with Stelter going to Regionals as the fourth seed.
In Monday's seeding match, Magana snuck in a lateral drop and instantly put Stelter on his back.
"The assistant coach warned him (Magana) about trying the lateral drop too early," Mabton Coach John Kilian said. "His opponents know he likes to do that."
Whether Stelter expected it or not, he wasn't able to counter the move. After Magana put him on his back, he let Stelter go before pinning him using an arm bar.
"It was what we kind of expected," Kilian added.
Magana went 3-1 at Districts and Monday's win put his season record at 21-15.
The Regional tournament will be held Saturday, Feb. 10, in Royal City starting at 10 a.m.
