League leading scorer Aaron Van de Graaf has been selected as the co-player of the year for the 2006-07 season.
The senior is one of three Sunnyside Christian High School players named to the Greater Columbia 'B' League boys basketball all-opponent team. The two other Knights receiving all-star honors are his cousin, senior Cole Van de Graaf, and junior Joel Koopmans.
Van de Graaf, a 6'1" guard, shares co-player of the year honors with Riverside Christian's Chris Pynch.
"You're talking about two pretty good guards between those two," said SCHS Coach Dean Wagenaar.
As the Greater Columbia 'B' League's top scorer this season, Van de Graaf averaged 20.2 points per contest in leading the Knights to the conference title. He shot at an amazing 66.7 percent clip from two-point field goal range, and made 55-of-135 shots from behind the 3-point arc (40.7 percent). Van de Graaf, too, has a team leading 99 assists in the 22 games the Knights have played thus far.
Sunnyside Christian's season continues this week at the 1B State tournament, which begins today (Wednesday) in the Yakima SunDome.
Van de Graaf's cousin, the 6'4" Cole Van de Graaf, earned all-opponent league honors based on his overall strong play. He's averaged 10.3 points per game this season shooting 64.7 percent from the field. The taller of the two cousins also pulled down an average of 6.0 rebounds per game and has totaled 48 assists so far this year.
Koopmans, a 6'1" junior, is the Knights' leading rebounder this season, snaring an average of 6.7 boards per game. Koopmans has also averaged 13.8 points per game on 62.3 percent shooting from two-point range. To date, he has a team second best 60 assists on the year.
Bickleton High School's Cody Loomis was also named as one of the 12 Greater Columbia 'B' League all-opponent team members.
