Van Wingerden, Newhouse, Schutt earn all-star honors

Three members of the 2006-07 Greater Columbia 'B' League girls basketball all-opponent team are Sunnyside Christian Lady Knights.

A total of 12 girls were named to the 'B' league all-star team, including player of the year Molly McGree of LaSalle High School.

The three Lady Knights afforded all-league honors include senior Tori Van Wingerden and juniors Emma Newhouse and Andrea Schutt.

Van Wingerden, who averaged 16 points a contest through the 20-game regular season, finished second in the balloting for player of the year honors.

Newhouse, who sustained a season ending torn ACL injury recently, averaged approximately nine points and nine rebounds per game this season. Schutt, a 6'0" non-starter for the Lady Knights this season whose specialty is working the paint, also averaged nine points and nine rebounds per contest.

SCHS Coach Al Smeenk said Van Wingerden, Newhouse and Schutt were all extremely instrumental in the Lady Knights posting a 17-3 regular season record this year. Smeenk added that Newhouse will be sorely missed at the 1B State tournament, which opened this morning (Wednesday) in the Yakima SunDome.

Schutt, he said, will be called upon to start the State tourney games as a forward, instead of coming in off the bench as a reserve to play the post. "Andrea will rotate into the post when we bring other kids in off the bench to play the wing," said Smeenk.
