Mabton wrestlers destroy Naches Rangers

NACHES - The Mabton High School wrestling team visited Naches High School last night, beating the Rangers 53-18.

All of the Rangers' points came off of forfeits. The Vikings didn't field wrestlers in the 140- and 145-pound divisions, giving Naches two wins there and an injured Damien Marquez (189 lbs.) sat out his match, giving the Rangers their third forfeit.

Besides those three forfeits the Vikings won every match last night.

"We just kept on winning," Mabton Coach John Kilian said. "It was a beautiful thing."

Eric Meza (112 lbs.) gave Mabton a 3-0 lead to start when he beat Mike Mosier 15-14.

"Eric got a three-point near fall right at the end to pull him ahead by one point," Kilian said. "He was down by two and we were screaming,' you got to turn him,' and he did."

Luis Aviles (119 lbs.) then pinned Naches' Ricky Hartwell in 59 seconds to boost Mabton's lead to 9-0.

Pins by Mabton's Andy Rivera (125 lbs.) over Tyler Slick in 1:24 and Arturo Nunez (130 lbs.) over Derek Campbell in 3:17 quickly stretched the Vikings' lead to 21-0.

"Arturo was behind 9-7 when he pinned Campbell," Kilian added. "We didn't know a whole lot about Naches. They had some success at some earlier tournaments and we never expected this."

Mabton kept padding its lead when Andy Torres (135 lbs.) scored a technical fall against Naches' Junior Cabrera, beating him 16-0. Torres put Cabrera on his back four times in their match.

After two forfeits in the 140- and 145-lb. weight classes, Mabton's lead was 26-12.

Vicente Tovar (152 lbs.) then pinned Naches' Jacob Dilley in 5:42 seconds.

"He was behind 15-12 when he got the pin," Kilian said of Tovar. "It had been a flip-flop match, back and forth, until Vicente finally caught him in the end and hung on for the pin."

Up 32-12, Mabton's Angelo Salinas (160 lbs.) beat Rowdy Gangle 26-18.

"Neither one of them could stay off their backs," Kilian said.

With the score tied at 16, Salinas outscored Gangle 10-2 in the final round to pull out the victory and increase the lead to 36-12.

After a forfeit in the 189-pound weight class, Mabton's Robert Marquez (215 lbs.) beat Brian Jones 13-7.

"Jones is one of their better kids," Kilian stated. "It was 6-6 after the end of round two."

Eli Perez (285 lbs.) beat Naches' Jacob Stiles 8-0.

"Perez wrestled well," Kilian added. "Stiles is pretty good and Eli handled him easily."

At 103 pounds, Mabton's Carlos Mendez wrestled Armani Emmal and beat her 13-2 for the final match of the night.

Mabton (2-0, 4-1) will travel to Grandview tomorrow (Saturday), Jan. 6, for the Grandview Invitational, at 10 a.m.
