BICKLETON - Bickleton's Lady Pirates dropped two home games this past weekend against LaSalle and Riverside Christian, 76-17 and 80-21, respectively.
"It was a tough weekend and we were facing off against big schools," said Coach Tom Whitmore.
Whitmore said of the Friday night match-up against the LaSalle Lightning that they were the best team the Pirates have faced this season.
"We actually played pretty well that game," Whitmore said. "Last year, we only had four points against them."
Getting back on defense was a big issue for the ladies, he said. "When LaSalle got the ball they were gone," he said.
The Lady Pirates had 35 turnovers in the game, most of which were converted into buckets by the Lightning, Whitmore said.
By halftime, the scoring was already lopsided, with LaSalle up by 39.
Saturday night against Riverside Christian, Whitmore said, "We played like we were tired."
Again, transitioning back into defense proved to be the Lady Pirates' Achilles heel. "We're just too slow getting back. We're working on it," said Whitmore.
The Pirates had 47 turnovers against the Crusaders, but Whitmore said many of those weren't forced; they were due to bad decisions, poor passing, traveling and going out of bounds.
"They weren't really forced turnovers, we just weren't really in the game," he said.
By Saturday night's game, Whitmore said the focus was to do better on rebounding and the Lady Pirates delivered. Katelynn Clinton finished the night with 11 boards and Chelsey Mercer collected nine.
"The rebounding stats were the plus side of the night," said Whitmore.
The Lady Pirates are now 1-5 in league play and 2-6 for the season. They face off against Lyle tomorrow (Tuesday) night.
