Neither Lyle nor Glenwood/Trout Lake was any match for the Sunnyside Christian High School boys basketball team this past weekend.
The Knights thumped the Cougars on Lyle's home floor, 78-47, Friday night. Glenwood/Trout Lake fell by a 72-36 score in the Sunnyside Christian gym Saturday. The two 'B' league victories improved the Knights to 6-0 in conference play, 12-0 overall on the season.
In Saturday's home win against the visiting Mustangs, Sunnyside Christian limited Trout Lake's top scorer, Tim Dierden, to a single point in the first half. Dierden, who had been averaging 17 points a game, did score seven points after intermission, but most of those came with Sunnyside Christian's reserves on the floor.
The Knights jumped out to a 25-7 first quarter lead on Glenwood/Trout Lake, without the benefit of employing its press or halfcourt trap. "We stayed in a man-to-man defense the entire game," said SCHS Coach Dean Wagenaar, intimating that his club didn't want to show its high powered defensive schemes with the District tournament looming just four weeks from now.
Behind the game high 20-point performance of senior Aaron Van de Graaf, the Knights went on to outscore Glenwood/Trout Lake by a 19-11 margin in the second period to take a 44-18 lead into intermission.
From there the Knights coasted, outscoring the visitors 28-18 in the second half using their bench players freely. Junior Joel Koopmans, like Van de Graaf, scored in double figures for Sunnyside Christian, finishing with 12 points. Wagenaar said senior Nick De Jong had a big game, as well, for his club, scoring nine points.
The lone negative to come from Saturday's game was the first four minutes of the third quarter, when Sunnyside Christian had a hard time buying a bucket. The Knights ended up hitting just 1-of-9 shots from behind the 3-point arc that period.
"We had some good looks and put up some good shots, but they just wouldn't fall for us that quarter," Wagenaar said.
Friday at Lyle, Wagenaar said his team was on a mission to take control early-on.
"We were sharp in the first half," he said. "The kids were motivated."
The result was a 27-9 run by the Knights in the opening quarter, with Van de Graaf paving the way with 13 first period points. He finished with a game high 27.
Sunnyside Christian boosted its lead over the Cougars to 43-15 heading into intermission.
"Lyle tried to run with us in the first half," Wagenaar said. "I think that was a mistake. They dug a hole for themselves."
Sunnyside Christian switched to its vaunted halfcourt trap a couple of minutes into the game, which accounted for numerous breakaway buckets by the Knights. All told, Lyle coughed up the ball 19 times in the opening half, with 12 more turnovers coming after the halftime break. The Brouwer brothers, Jesse and Lucas, were responsible for many of those turnovers, as each of them came away with six steals.
Wagenaar pulled his starters with six minutes remaining in the game and his team up by 38. The Cougars were able to chip away and cut the final deficit to just 31 points.
In addition to the 27 points Van de Graaf poured in, the Knights got double-digit scoring performances from Koopmans, Lucas Brouwer and Cole Van de Graaf with 17, 11 and 11 points, respectively.
Sunnyside Christian is scheduled to take on LaSalle in the Lightning's home gym this coming Friday, and will host Klickitat the next night.
