LYLE - With mere seconds left in the game, Lady Pirate Chelsey Mercer's field goal forced the Lyle Cougars into overtime, ultimately garnering the Bickleton girls basketball team a 38-37 league win.
It was in overtime that the Pirates started pressing the ball full court, falling back into zone defense and challenging Lyle's guards, said Coach Tom Whitmore.
"We had been staying behind by a few points, so it was a nice little comeback," he said.
In overtime, with only 19 seconds to go, Tricia McBride hit two free throws, creating a one-point lead for the Pirates.
With only a few seconds left in the game, bad passing on Lyle's part kept the ball in the hands of the Pirates until the clock ran out.
The Pirates rebounding was excellent for the night, with Katelynn Clinton racking up 20 boards. Phylicia Pearson collected eight, Jeannette Jarvis had seven and Chelsey Mercer had six.
Scoring-wise, Clinton powered Bickleton with a team high 17 points. Pearson added a 10-point effort.
Early in the game, the Lady Pirates ran into foul trouble, with Mercer and Morgan McBride each committing four by halftime.
Whitmore was then faced with pulling the players for the third quarter and letting them play in the fourth, or allowing them to continue play. He allowed them to continue play and said, "They hung in there and they both made it into the fourth quarter."
Whitmore credits the win to the girls playing smart ball. "They weren't playing soft defense," he said. Mercer and Pearson each had four steals.
The Lady Pirates varsity squad squares off against the Mabton Vikings 'C' squad at home this Thursday night.
They are now 3-6 for the season and 2-5 in league play.
