Controlled burn reignites, destroys garage

GRANDVIEW - An effort to burn off some weeds got out of hand yesterday, destroying a garage near Grandview.

Property owner Elias Milanez yesterday morning burned off weeds near the garage on his property at 1430 Apple Way Road. He told firefighters he put out the fire with a hose.

But later yesterday the fire re-ignited and engulfed the garage and a van. District 5 firefighters were dispatched to the scene just before 6:30 p.m. yesterday and controlled the garage and van fire before it could spread to nearby houses just east and north of the garage. Grandview Police also assisted with traffic control.

District 5 Captain Antonio Castillo said the property loss from the fire was $50,000 and estimated the value of contents lost-including the van, a lawn mower and some tools-in the blaze at $15,000.

An investigation in the case has been forwarded to the Yakima Fire Marshal.
