Sharks snap two-meet losing streak

Sunnyside's Kaitlyn Broersma races to a first place finish last night in the girls 16&U, 50-meter breaststroke race. Broersma covered the length of the pool in 37.85 seconds, more than seven seconds quicker than second place finishing Sabrina Galaviz of Toppenish.

Both, Sunnyside's 10&U and 18&U girls swept all the first and second place finishes in their respective divisions last night to power the Sharks to a convincing 465-337 victory over the visiting Toppenish Tarpons.

For Sunnyside, Thursday night's win was its second of the season in as many match-ups against the Tarpons this summer. The Sharks stole a 431-402 decision from the Tarpons in the Toppenish pool back on June 21.

Last night's victory also ended a two-meet losing streak for Sunnyside. The win upped the Sharks' record to 4-2 in the Mid-Valley Summer Swim League standings.

Toppenish's boys - especially the likes of Jonathan Imperial and Nathan Koerner at 8&U, Jeremy Klarich and Nicolas Huylar at 12&U, and Anthony Galaviz at 16&U - overpowered Sunnyside's boys by a 211-184 margin.

Sunnyside's girls, however, more than made up the difference, outscoring Toppenish's girls by a whopping 281-126 margin.

That domination started in the girls 10&U division. Lyndsee Anderson churned through the water to score three victories for the Sharks, winning the 50-meter butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle races. Sunnyside teammates Katelyn Banks and Allyson Weddle had Anderson's back in the two other 10&U events, as Banks sped to the win in the 50-backstroke and Weddle claimed top honors in the 200-meter individual medley. Sunnyside's Natalie Hernandez also had a big night at 10&U, as she recorded three runner-up finishes (50-fly and breast and 200 IM).

Sunnyside's 18&U girls were just as impressive. Leading the charge in the senior girls division was Katie Knee, who claimed the top spot in all five races. Mollie Pearson scored three second place finishes at 18&U for Sunnyside (fly, breast, free), while Heather Van Corbach (back) and Crystal Moore (IM) each had a runner-up placing for the Sharks, as well.

Sunnyside's 14&U girls also made mincemeat of the Tarpons. Marisa Broersma sped to victory in the breast, free and IM events for the Sharks, adding a pair of second place finishes in the fly and back; while teammate Alissa Martin won the 50-fly and placed second in the breast, free and IM. Toppenish's Ariel Valdez prevented Sunnyside's 14&U girls from sweeping all five individual races, as Valdez won going away in the 50-meter backstroke. She hit the finishing wall 2.06 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Broersma.

The Sharks' Kaitlyn Broersma won all five 16&U girls events last night, but Toppenish stayed relatively close in that age division by claiming all five second place finishes. Sabrina Galaviz had three of those runner-up finishes for Toppenish (fly, breast, back), with Kristen Cleveringa (free) and Shaneka Tannawasha (IM) garnering the other two.

The two boys divisions in which Sunnyside had its way were 14&U and 18&U.

Brad Luff was a dynamo for the Sharks at 14&U, winner of the 50-meter fly, breast and free races, as well as the 200-meter individual medley. Sunnyside teammate Cristian Vargas scored three second place finishes at 14&U (fly, breast, IM), while Andrew Rodriguez nailed down the top spot in the 50-back for the Sharks.

At boys 18&U, Zile Wagner and David Knee provided the one-two punch for the Sharks. Wagner picked up three victories in the fly, breast and IM, and had a second place finish in the back. Knee was victorious in the 50-backstroke, and posted second place finishes in the fly, breast, free and IM. Toppenish's Tyler Ward averted a shutout in that age division for the Tarpons by winning the 50-free by an incredulous 5.7 seconds over the second place finishing Knee.
