SELAH - The Sunnyside Sharks Rotary swim team edged Toppenish for second place honors in last weekend's six-team Mid-Valley Swim League championship meet held in Selah.
Prosser won the team title with 716.5 points, followed by Sunnyside with 561, just nipping Toppenish with 551.5 points.
Aydan Harrington of Sunnyside was second in the butterfly, an event won by Naches' Kaley Roberts in 39.46.
Harrington clocked a sixth place finish in the breaststroke, which was won by Prosser's Leah Blakney in 44.50. Roberts was less than a half second back in second place at 44.77.
Roberts won the backstroke in 35.04 and the freestyle in 30.54. Harrington captured fourth place honors for Sunnyside in the freestyle.
Overall, Harrington scored 15 points for the Sharks in individual competition, the third most among girls in her age group.
The Sunnyside quartet of Katelyn Banks, Natalie Hernandez, Kalie Bestebreur and Lyndsee Anderson was second in the medley relay, just two seconds back of the winning squad from Grandview, which clocked a time of 2:23.09.
The Shark foursome of Anderson, Banks, Hernandez and Allison Weddle claimed first place honors in the freestyle relay in 1:58.68.
Anderson was third for Sunnyside in the breaststroke in a tight race that saw the top four finishers separated by little more than a fifth of a second. Toppenish's Katrina Johnson finished in 35.12, while Anderson clocked a time of 35.22.
Makensie Forsyth of Prosser won the butterfly in 30.55.
Weddle claimed the runner-up spot for Sunnyside in the backstroke, losing to Grandview's Tiana Perez in a time of 31.93.
The Sharks found their biggest success in individual events in the freestyle, with Weddle and Anderson placing one-two in a photo finish. Weddle's winning time was 27.29, followed by Anderson's 27.35.
Anderson was fourth for Sunnyside in the IM, an event won by Forsyth in 2:43.88.
Allyson Weddle scored the fourth most individual points among girls in her age group with 20 points. Anderson was fifth with 18 points.
Brittany Broersma and Tara Van Corbach of Sunnyside were the third and fourth highest scoring girls in their age group with 22 and 20 points, respectively.
The Sharks' team of Madi Marquez, Broersma, Van Corbach and Alexandra Newhouse were second in the medley relay in 1:59.93, a little more than a second behind first place Prosser's clocking of 1:58.66.
The same foursome was second in the freestyle relay to Selah's first place time of 1:40.42.
Prosser's Brenna Cherry won the backstroke in 27.72, while Naches' Paige Engquist won the freestyle in 23.10.
Van Corbach was fourth for Sunnyside in the free, while Broersma posted a second place time of 2:13.24 in the IM, less than a second behind Prosser's Hailey Rankin's first place time of 2:12.28.
Van Corbach was also second in the butterfly, nipped in a close race with Selah's Aricka Smith. Smith's first place time was 26.02 and Van Corbach was right on her heels in 26.17.
In the breaststroke, Van Corbach took third place in 31.88 and Broersma fourth in 31.98. Prosser's Amy Ingram won the event in 30.68.
Marisa Broersma of Sunnyside was second in the breaststroke with a time of 29.62 to Selah's Shannon Gaskill, who was first with a time of 28.08. Broersma was also second in the butterfly in a time of 25.72, with Toppenish's Beth Klingele first in 24.52.
There would be no runner-up finish for Broersma in the IM, though, as the Shark bested the field with a first place time of 2:11.55. Teammate Alissa Martin was fourth.
Broersma also won the freestyle, posting a time of 22.86.
The Sunnyside team of Emily Hutchins, Kristen Wedam, Martin and Broersma clocked a first place time of 1:39.40 in the freestyle relay.
The same foursome was third in the medley relay in a time of 1:56.26. Selah won the event with a time of 1:51.90
Broersma was second in the backstroke with a clocking of 28.21 to Ariel Valdez of Toppenish, who posted a top time of 27.77.
Broersma was the top scorer among all girls in her age group with 39 points.
Kaitlyn Broersma of Sunnyside was the top scorer among all girls in this age group with 39 points.
Broersma was second in the backstroke to Prosser's McKenna Elliot. Broersma also claimed runner-up honors in the freestyle in a time of 21.48 to the first place time of 21.33 posted by Selah's Shelby Bodine.
Broersma ruled the pool in the IM with a first place time of 1:59.63.
McKenna and Broersma also went one-two in the butterfly, with McKenna posting a top time of 23 seconds.
But it was Broersma back on top in the breaststroke with a time of 26.53.
Sunnyside's Katie Knee was the top scorer in this age group with 43 points. Rachelle Durfey of the Sharks was the fourth highest scoring girl with 28.
Knee was second to Prosser's Diana Smith in the breaststroke. Smith won the tight contest with a time of 28.71, followed by Knee in 28.95. Durfey was third in 29.29.
Knee dominated in the IM, winning by a margin of nearly five seconds with a time of 2:01.48. Durfey was fourth.
It was Knee again in the backstroke, prevailing with a top time of 25.85.
Sunnyside had its best results in the freestyle, with Knee and Durfey finishing a close one-two. Knee won with a time of 21.72, followed by Durfey in 21.78.
Knee and Durfey were first and third in the butterfly, with Knee winning in a time of 23.16.
The team of Knee, Kaitlyn Broersma, Mollie Pearson and Durfey was first in the medley relay in 1:42.05.
The same four girls ruled the pool again in the freestyle relay by posting a first place time of 1:30.90.
Sunnyside's Tavian Valenzuela earned the fourth most points among boys in his age group, tallying 11 points for the Sharks. Sunnyside teammates Zackary Spidle and Bryce Murphy scored seven and six points, respectively.
Jonathan Imperial of Toppenish won the butterfly in 33.24 and the breaststroke in 37.86. Valenzuela was third in the breaststroke in 43.57.
Bryce Murphy was fourth for Sunnyside in the backstroke, an event won by Toppenish's Nathan Koerner in 32.55.
In freestyle competition, Imperial was first in 28.33 and Valenzuela was Sunnyside's top finisher with a fourth place time of 36.62.
Sunnyside was second in the medley relay with the team of Christian Murphy, Trajen Frank, Alex Perez and Joel Martin. Prosser won the event in 2:18.11. The Sharks posted a time of 2:33.89.
The Shark foursome of Perez, Fox Rodriguez, Murphy and Martin was third in the freestyle relay, which was also won by Prosser.
Taylor Gant of Prosser won the backstroke in 34.55 and the butterfly in 31.44, while teammate Riley Lusk won the freestyle in 26.41.
Sunnyside's only top four finish in individual competition was in the breaststroke, which saw Martin clock a third place finish. The event was won by Gant in 34.57, who also won the IM in 2:35.68.
Toppenish won the medley relay in 2:01.51 and Selah won the freestyle relay in 1:38.52.
Prosser's Ty Hobbick won the backstroke in 28.13 and the butterfly in 25.86. Grandview's Fabian Ruiz won the freestyle in 23.34. Jeremy Klarich of Toppenish won the IM in 2:10.89 and the breaststroke in 31.16.
Brad Luff of Sunnyside was the top scorer among boys in this age group with 38 points.
The Shark foursome of Tim Stiteler, Cristian Vargas, Edgar Vargas and Luff was second to Selah in the freestyle relay. The same Sunnyside team earned first place honors in the medley relay in 1:45.95.
Luff was first in the backstroke in 26.09, edging Toppenish's Dillon Beard by three one-hundredths of a second. Luff also blitzed the field in the IM, besting the rest by nearly seven seconds with a time of 1:59.78.
Prosser's Chris McKinney took top honors in the freestyle with a time of 19.90, with Luff finishing third in 20.95.
The Sharks had their best individual event in the butterfly, with Luff first in 22.51 and Edgar Vargas taking fourth place honors.
Luff was fourth in the breaststroke in 28.36.
Toppenish's Anthony Galaviz was first in the breaststroke in 24.30, in the butterfly with a time of 20.25 and in the freestyle in 19.10.
Tyler Burgett of Prosser won the IM in 1:49.63 and Selah's Ryan Pittman won the backstroke in 22.53.
Selah won the medley relay in 1:27.27 and the freestyle relay in 1:19.43.
The Sharks' foursome of Jakob Anderson, Matt Hatfield, David Knee and Zile Wagner was fourth in the freestyle relay.
Wagner earned fourth place honors for Sunnyside in the freestyle and in the IM.
Selah's Zack Schab was first in the backstroke in 21.90, first in the IM in 1:40.87 and first in the freestyle in 17.81.
Schab also took the top spot in the butterfly in 19.11 and made it a clean sweep of all five individual events with a first place time of 23.17 in the breaststroke.
The best Sunnyside finish was Zile Wagner's fourth place finish in the freestyle in a time of 21.06.
Other top individual performances for the Sharks came in the breaststroke, where Knee was fifth in 29.17 and Wagner sixth in 29.99.
Wagner was also fifth in the butterfly in 22.82. Knee was sixth and Wagner seventh in the backstroke with respective times of 29.05 and 30.11.
