Berg named new SHS girls hoop coach

Eric Berg is the new varsity girls basketball coach for Sunnyside High School.

The hiring was confirmed during action taken Thursday night by the Sunnyside School Board.

Berg is a familiar name to the program as he was previously an assistant coach at the varsity girls level. He is also a teacher in the school district.

He is a Sunnyside High School graduate and a graduate of the UW. Besides working in the girls hoops program, Berg also has assisted with the Grizzly football program.

At the same time, Sunnyside is still looking for a candidate to take the boys varsity basketball helm after former assistant Glenn Braman accepted a coaching and teaching position in the Tonasket School District.

Bill Daley is the high school athletic director and confirmed that Braman was offered the boys basketball program here.

"I think it's our loss," Daley said of Braman, who had been an assistant with the boys program. "His decision was based on family."

Daley confirmed that, "We do not have a head boys basketball candidate."

The basketball positions became vacant earlier this year when boys coach Steve Urrutia and girls coach Leo Gomez both stepped down from their respective programs.
