Sun Valley picks up extra inning win against Richland

RICHLAND - Following two straight losses, Sunnyside's Sun Valley baseball team took extra innings to beat Richland's Sundown Sport and Marine 11-9 Tuesday night.

Justin Reyes started on the mound for Sun Valley, pitching three innings and giving Sunnyside a 5-3 lead before being relieved by Travis Jones.

Sun Valley struck early in the game, scoring one run in the first frame and piling up four more scores in the second inning.

Chance Graff opened the second with a one-out single and two passed balls later, he found himself on third base. Following a strikeout, Andre Sarmiento walked and Luis Valles singled, driving home Graff for a 2-0 Sun Valley lead.

The Richland pitcher next walked Mario Sanchez, which loaded the bases for Reyes, who singled and drove in Sarmiento. With the bases still loaded, Jones was walked, scoring a run and then Jasper Rubalcava singled, driving in another run.

In Reyes' three innings of work he struck out three batters, walked one and gave up four hits and two earned runs. Jones pitched the last five innings for the win, striking out two batters, walking four and giving up four earned runs.

Sun Valley picked up one run in the fourth to go up 7-3 but Richland came back with three runs in the bottom of the frame to close the gap to 7-6.

In the top of the fifth, Valles and Reyes were hit by pitches. A throwing error on a ball put into play by Jones allowed both Valles and Reyes to score.

Richland picked up one run in the bottom of the fifth and then scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to push the game into extra innings.

To start the eighth inning, Reyes got to first base on an error and Jones singled. Rubalcava then doubled, sending Reyes home. Jones also tried to score on the play but was thrown out at home. The scoring ended when Rubalcava was brought home by a Frankie Ochoa single and Sunnyside hung on to its two-run lead to win the game.

"Jones did a great job of pitching," Sun Valley Coach Tom Schmick said. "We got clutch hits from Rubalcava and Ochoa in the last inning."

Jones finished the game hitting 2-for-3 with an RBI and a triple. Reyes was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Rubalcava hit 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI and Valles was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Graff finished 2-for-3, Ochoa was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Jaime Sarmiento went 1-for-3.

The win raised Sun Valley's record to 7-10 and the team will host Richland's Harrington's Trophies today (Wednesday) for a 5:30 p.m. game.
