School board asks for yes vote

Please join us in voting "Yes" for the Sunnyside School District Educational Facility Bond. We have spent many hours studying this issue and believe this proposal will be great for our kids and great for the community.

If you vote "yes," the cost to you, the taxpayer, will be 14 cents per thousand, or a $14 increase on a $100,000 home. It will increase our tax rate to a maximum of $1.60. This will still be the second lowest tax rate in Yakima County. No academic funds will be used for the construction of the facility.

Students and community members use the high school auditorium on a daily basis. The sound and lighting systems are more than 20 years old and are no longer adequate to meet the needs of those who use the facility. The current football field bleachers are more than 40 years old and no longer meet current codes. The district's insurance company has deemed the bleachers a safety liability. Last year, we appointed a committee to carefully study all options for upgrading these facilities to meet current codes. After careful review, we feel like this is the best option for your consideration.

The proposed high school auditorium improvements include upgrades to the outdated lighting and sound systems. These much needed improvements will ensure this community treasure will provide a quality environment for community and school events for many more years to come. The proposed athletic facility improvements include replacement of the unsafe grandstands at Clem Senn Field, more restrooms, additional parking and replacement of outdoor lighting systems that don't meet current code requirements. These facility upgrades are completely necessary and will be a huge benefit to the students and to the community. If the bond doesn't pass, the district will be forced to use existing academic funds to replace the bleachers.

We ask you to join us when we vote"yes" for Sunnyside Schools. Our students need safe places to perform, to compete and to succeed.
