Grizzlies win season opener

The Sunnyside soccer team opened its season last Friday at the Richland jamboree and then hosted Bonney Lake High School on Saturday, winning 2-1 to start the season.

The Grizzlies played two non-regulation length matches at the jamboree, one against Southridge and the other against Richland.

"We played great soccer," Sunnyside Coach Juan Pineda said. "We were sensational in all units of the game."

He said offensely and defensively his team played very well and although they were unable to score against the Suns, there were opportunities, including two shots that went off the goal posts.

Because of that, Sunnyside had to settle for a 0-0 draw.

Against Richland, it was a different story. Alex Zaragoza scored a direct shot from 25 yards out to give Sunnyside a 1-0 lead and that would be all the Grizzlies would need as it proved to be the only score of the game.

"Richland is a very solid team," Pineda said. "They will be a top contender in their league."

On Saturday, Sunnyside hosted Bonney Lake.

The Grizzlies scored first in the 30th minute. Romelio Contreras blasted a shot from 35 yards out that bounced off the cross bar. That's when Sunnyside's Brian Galvan recovered it 18 yards out, outran the defenders and scored to make it 1-0.

In the second half, Sunnyside scored in the 51st minute.

"Galvan fed Romie the ball in the box and Romie read the play, beat the defenders on the run and kicked the ball to the left of the keeper," Pineda said.

With the Grizzlies up 2-0, Bonney Lake's Chris Worthen scored in the 67th minute to make it 2-1 and the Grizzlies held on after that for the win.

"We looked solid on the front line and the defense is solid, too," Pineda said. "We have a lot of room to improve in the mid-field."

Pineda said his mid-fielders need to attack and defend with more speed and are a little rusty now. He also said he would like to see his forwards finish more.

"Overall, I'm content," he added. "These are what these first games are for."

The Grizzlies will host Grandview Thursday, March 15, at 7 p.m. in a non-league match.
