Harry Raymond Steffens, 73, of Sunnyside died Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Harry Steffens was born March 12, 1934, in JamesTown, N.D. to Arthur and Nora (Johnson) Steffens. He attended primary grades in Jamestown, N.D., Prosser and graduated from Mabton High School in 1952.

He served in the U. S. Navy. He married Edna (Tip) in May 1956. He was employed by the City of Sunnyside, first as patrolman for the police department and later transferred to Sunnyside Fire Department. He retired as Sunnyside fire chief in 1982.

He is survived by his wife, Tip, of Sunnyside; a son, Michael Eric of Sunnyside; and one grandson. He is also survived by three sisters, Shirley (Rod) Garrison of Yakima, Rosella Kirkwood of Palm Springs, Calif., and Helen Smolen of Holland, Mich.; a brother, Gene (Loretta) of Fountain City, Ind.; and numerous nieces, nephews; cousins; and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Arnold, Gordon and Jerome; a sister, Margaret Elane; and two brothers-in-law.

Viewing and visitation will be Sunday, March 18, 2007, from 1 to 6 pm and Monday, March 19, 2007, from 8:30 am until time of funeral service, at 11 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens. Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
