A total of 17 errors on the day spelled doom for the Sunnyside Christian High School girls fastpitch softball team this past Saturday.
Visiting Morton took advantage of the SCHS miscues and swept the non-league twin bill, 8-6 and 16-0.
It's going to take us awhile this year to get where we need to be," said SCHS Coach Sandy Harris. "We've got just about everybody playing new positions this year."
It didn't help matters any, either, that Sunnyside Christian was without its No. 1 pitcher on Saturday-senior Tori Van Wingerden. She was out of town participating in the annual East/West all-star girls basketball game.
"We looked at Saturday as a chance for our younger pitchers to get some game experience," said Harris, noting for the most part they struggled in getting their pitches over the plate.
In the opening 8-6 loss to Morton, hurler Melanie Van Wingerden went the distance for the Lady Knights. She scattered eight hits and fanned four, but the 11 walks she yielded came back to haunt the home team.
To Sunnyside Christian's credit in the opener, "...we hung in there, even with making six errors and giving up the 11 walks," said Harris. The Lady Knights went into their last at-bat trailing Morton by an 8-3 score, but punched three runs across the plate to make the game interesting. Freshman Hillary Bosma started the seventh inning rally by blasting a solo home run. A single by Abby Bangs, an RBI triple by Brittany den Hoed and a run producing sac fly by Van Wingerden accounted for the two other scores.
Bangs and den Hoed each finished the opening game with 2-for-4 efforts at the plate.
Morton was led in the opener by Christine Summers (2-for-4) and Chantelle Coleman (2-for-5).
Saturday's nightcap was a different story. Morton tallied four runs in the top of the second and never looked back enroute to posting a 16-0 victory.
"This game just got away from us," said Harris, explaining the 11 errors her club committed gave Morton too many second chance opportunities.
Offensively for Sunnyside Christian in the twin bill finale, none of the Lady Knights managed more than one hit in the game.
Sunnyside Christian (0-0, 1-2) is scheduled to open league play this coming Friday at home against the Lyle Cougars. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
