MABTON - Mabton Mayor Velva Herrera is asking local residents to begin conserving water immediately.
Yesterday, Herrera issued a community-wide water conservation alert because one of Mabton's primary wells is not functioning.
"Well number three is down," said Herrera. "We don't know how long it will be before it's back up and operating."
Herrera said Mabton residents are being asked to forego watering their lawns and washing their automobiles until well number three is operational again. She said well number four is being used at the present time, but that it is only capable of pumping 500 gallons a minute.
"This past Sunday, when it was so nice outside, we pumped more than a million gallons of water on just that one day," said Herrera. "It's very important that everyone conserves water until we get this problem fixed."
She said the large nursery in Mabton, as well as the local school district, have both agreed to conserve water until well number three is back on line.
"We need everyone else to comply, as well," Herrera said.
