Marie Arends, 80, of Sunnyside passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2007, at Sun Terrace Retirement and Assisted Living in Sunnyside.

Marie was born in Oak Harber, to Arnold and Jantina (Beirling) Arends. She moved with her parents and family to Prosser in 1936. She graduated from Prosser High School and Yakima Business College.

She was employed by Benton County Abstract and Title in Prosser. She moved to Sunnyside in 1948, where she was employed by Smith and McKibben Insurance and Real Estate for seven years. Later, she was employed by American Can Company/James River Corp. for 34 years until retiring in 1990. She moved to Zillah in 1998.

She was a volunteer for the American Heart Association for many years and Lower Valley Hospice. She was a lifetime member of the Christian Reformed Church, and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age. She sand in the choir for almost 50 years. Music was a favorite pastime. She also enjoyed fishing, hiking, walking, motorcycling, snowmobiling, and traveling, especially to Whidbey Island and the Oregon Coast.

Marie is survived by two brothers, Bill Arends of Wenatchee and Dick Arends of Grangeville, Idaho; two sisters, Angeline Den Boer of Grandview and Ida Van Klinken of Prosser; numerous nieces, nephews; and friends.

Marie was preceded in death by her mother and father; and two sisters, Jeanette Spradlin and Reka Ramerman.

Visitation will held today, Tuesday, May 8, 2007, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside.

Memorials may be made to Sunnyside Christian School or Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

The family of Marie Arends would like to thank everyone at Sun Terrace, Lower Valley Hospice, and the caregivers and friends at Zillah Faith Community Church for the wonderful care she received.
