Grandview advances No. 1 players in District

ELLENSBURG - The Grandview High School tennis team advances its No. 1 players to this coming Saturday's District finals.

Grandview No. 1 boys singles player Rogi Fajardo defeated Jose Amador of Quincy 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of District competition yesterday. He advanced to the second round of play, defeating Grant Wilson of East Valley 6-2, 6-2.

No. 1 boys doubles players Marco Diaz and Nick Saldana of Grandview also defeated competitors Dilbar Chhokar and Eric Borgholthaus of East Valley in identical sets 6-0, 6-0 during the first round of play. The Grandview players were victorious in the second round against Jonah Gowan and Riley Peterson of Othello 6-2, 6-2.

Miranda Shreeve, Grandview's No. 1 girls singles player, had a bye in the first round of District competition yesterday. She was at the net with Emily Carbough of Ellensburg during the second round. Carbough was defeated 6-0, 6-1.

In girls doubles play the No. 1 team of Christine Penwell and Sydney Mottice of Grandview won the first round 6-1, 6-1 against Gloria Guiaro and Mayra Manzo of Toppenish. Penwell and Mottice moved on to the second round, winning 6-3, 6-3 to defeat Prosser's Michelle Dorsett and Ali Suhadolnik.

Grandview No. 2 singles player Edgar Candido was defeated in the first round of yesterday's District competition. He fell to Matt Taylor of Prosser 6-1, 7-6 (3).

The No. 2 boys doubles team for Grandview, consisting of Raymond Cantu and Gabe Contreras, played two rounds of District competition. They were defeated by Blake VanDyke and Jake Knodell of Quincy 6-0, 6-1.

No. 2 girls singles player Kyla Leyendekker of Grandview also advanced to the second round after defeating Christina Moreno of Toppenish 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5). Leyendekker fell to Selah's Nicole Smith 7-5, 6-2 during the second round of play.

The Grandview No. 3 boys doubles team of Richie Gamino and Garrett Walker, the No. 2 girls doubles team of Trina Collins and Mary Gamino and girls No. 3 doubles players Steph Grimmus and Samantha Wyatt did not advance past the first round of District.

Fajardo, Diaz, Saldana, Shreeve, Penwell and Mottice all advance to round three of District to be played in Ellensburg tomorrow (Saturday).
