We are writing in response to the letter to the editor, "Disappointed by actions of superintendent" (11-7-07), regarding the school district's decisions about BJ Miller's funeral. We would like to publicly apologize for any trouble or difficulties keeping the high school open caused the Miller family.
After consultation between the school board and the superintendent, it was decided to have the funeral at the time the family requested, but to keep the school open in the best interests of all our students. This made the planning of the funeral very difficult.
Traditionally in Sunnyside schools, funerals and memorials are held in the evenings or on Saturdays, but not when school is in session.
Any inconvenience or undue pain that was caused to John and Daria Miller was not intended, and we offer our sincere apologies.
/s/ Sunnyside School Board...Lorenzo Garza, Steve Carpenter, Miguel Puente, Rocky Simmons, Joanne Kilian, and Dr. Richard D. Cole, Superintendent
