2nd degree murder conviction results in 14-year prison term

During an appearance in Yakima County Superior Court yesterday (Tuesday), Sunnyside's Zacharias Cavasos plead guilty to second degree murder. As part of a plea agreement, a charge for second degree unlawful possession of a firearm was dropped.

Cavasos murdered Miguel A. Rivera, also from Sunnyside, at 1210 Beckner Road in March 2006. Rivera had been shot multiple times.

Cavasos was sentenced to 168 months in prison, with credit for time served to be determined by the Department of Corrections. Following his release, he'll serve 24 to 48 months of community custody.
