Augustin B. Gonzales, 93, of Granger, our beloved father, grandpa and friend passed away Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, following a battle with cancer.

He was born on April 15, 1914, in San Marcos, Texas to Pascual and Teadora (Barrios) Gonzales. Augustin earned several medals and ribbons, when he served in the U.S. Army, during WWII. He would often tell us stories of Naples, Tunisia and Rome, where he was stationed.

In 1946, he married his sweetheart, Faustina Palomo at McAllen, Texas. They migrated to the Yakima Valley in 1951 with their two children, Frank and Elida. They settled in Crewport first and later in Granger.

He worked very hard as a farm laborer to provide for his family. He was employed by several farmers in the Granger area. He was proud to have worked on the John Day Dam Project, and later worked for the Toppenish School District until his retirement.

Augustin loved spending time with his grandchildren. He had a nickname for each of them.

He enjoyed watching T.V., especially if the Seahawks or the Mariners were playing. He enjoyed working outside and keeping his yard green. He was a man of many talents. He would devise items instead of buying them. He would often repair broken down items from spare parts that he always seemed to have in his garage or shed.

Apa, we know that you will be at peace after suffering so much these last few months. We loved your smile and will always remember the firm but loving hand you had.

Augustin is survived by his son, Frank Gonzales of Ellensburg; his daughter, Elida (David) Eirich of Yakima; his grandchildren, Bobby (Alicia) Eirich, Crissy Gonzales, Kayla (Justin) Hill, Nick Gonzales and Rosie Gonzales; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Faustina in 1993; two brothers, Ricardo and Jesus Gonzales; and four sisters, Elena, Rita, Juana and Cecilia.

A special thank you, to the staff at Selah Convalescent Home, our friends and relatives for all of the prayers and support.

Viewing and visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 23, 2007, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Graveside services will be held Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Zillah Cemetery in Zillah.

Smith Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
