Prayer walk on tap at Sierra Vista Middle School

Organizers of Transformation Sunnyside are planning a prayer walk this Thursday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. at Sierra Vista Middle School.

Sunnyside-area farmer Jerry Haak is one of Transformation Sunnyside's organizers, and he said the prayer walk is an effort to expand the group's prayer emphasis to include students and teachers.

"We've been praying for our city," he says. "Now we're praying for the teachers and the kids." Over the next few years, Haak says he hopes Transformation Sunnyside will be able to conduct similar prayer walks in the halls of all the school buildings in the district.

At the same time, Haak said his group wants to hear from those who are already working with youth in the Sunnyside area.

"Transformation Sunnyside doesn't want to duplicate efforts that are already underway for youth," Haak notes. "We want to walk along side and make them stronger."

To that end, representatives from Sunnyside's Promise, Young Life and Moms in Touch will present their programs this Thursday to prayer walk participants. Sunnyside's Promise is part of a national effort to help communities reach out to their youths. Young Life is a Christian organization geared to students and Moms in Touch prays for teachers and students in the area.

Also this Thursday door prizes will be given away. Ice cream and brownies will also be served.

Haak said the presentations made this Thursday will be held in the Sierra Vista cafeteria.

Transformation Sunnyside's goal, Haak notes, is to "replace evil with good".

This Thursday night will be a chance to expand that message in prayer for the community's youths, he adds.

"Everyone complains that something should be done but they won't do anything," he says. "It's time to do something."
