YAKIMA - The Sunnyside swim team competed against Hanford last night at Yakima's Lions Pool, earning a 50-11 victory over the Falcons.
Kaitlyn Broersma bested her 3A State qualifying time in the 100-yard breaststroke, earning first place honors for Sunnyside in a time of 1:10.70. She also earned the victory in the 50-yard freestyle event, clocking a time of 26.34.
Sunnyside's Christine Kim clocked the best time in the 100-yard backstroke, earning another win for the team. Kim clocked a time of 1:10.57.
In addition to that performance, Kim earned runner-up honors behind Hanford's Franci Lestini's 57.36 in the 100-yard freestyle. Kim's time was 59.25.
Sunnyside's Toni Castillo earned second place honors for her performance in the 500-yard freestyle. She clocked a time of 6:21.85, behind Hanford's Megan Maynes, who won the event in 5:57.38.
Castillo also earned third place honors in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 56.21.
Third place honors were also earned by Sunnyside's Kristen Wedam. Wedam clocked a time of 1:24.00 in the 100-yard breastroke.
The 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of Wedam, Broersma, Castillo and Kim, earned another victory for the Sunnyside team. They clocked a time of 2:07.27 in the event.
Broersma and Kim teamed up with Emily Hutchins and Megan Razey in the 400-yard freestyle relay, earning runner-up honors. The foursome clocked a time of 4:45.08, whereas Hanford's winning time was 4:13.97 in the event.
The Sunnyside swim team competes against Southridge at Lions Pool tomorrow evening (Thursday), ending the regular season.
