Maria Castro, 78, a longtime Sunnyside resident, passed away Monday, Sept. 10, 2007, at her home.

Maria was born March 25, 1929, in Mercedes, Texas, the daughter of Pedro and Paula (Medina) Castro.

She had worked as a laborer, housekeeper, babysitter and seamstress throughout the Valley for more than 50 years.

Maria was an active member of St. Joseph's Parish and was involved in many different activities.

She loved to sew, spend time with family and watch novellas.

A special part of her life was working for St. Joseph's Rectory, where she met and knew several clergymen, and had made great friends with the sisters of the Missionary Daughters of the Most Pure Virgin Mary.

Maria is survived by nephews, Santos Gomez, Alfredo (Fred) Gomez and Lionel (Leo) Gomez, all of Sunnyside; her niece, Lucia (Lucy) Romero of Sunnyside; and four generations of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paula and Pedro Castro; numerous brothers and sisters including, Francisca "Kika" Vasquez; and many nieces and nephews.

Viewing and visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, from 1 to 8 p.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 6 p.m., at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, at 10 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sunnyside, with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside. Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
