Matty Besteman, 92, of Sunnyside went to be in the arms of his heavenly Savior on Friday, Sept. 21, 2007.
Matty was born Dec. 25, 1914, in Sunnyside to Adrianus and Maartje (VanBelle) Besteman.
On Oct. 2, 1942, he married Lorraine Bos, who passed away on Dec. 25, 1979. On Jan. 31, 1981, he married Anne Ooms.
Matty lived his entire life in Sunnyside and was a life long farmer.
He enjoyed camping with his family and friends and the competition of a good horseshoe game. The best days of his life were those spent riding his horses on mountain trails. In his later years, Matty enjoyed daily coffee with friends.
He was a member of the Sunnyside Christian Reformed Church.
Matty is survived by his loving wife, Anne Besteman of Sunnyside; his children, Maryanne Hof and husband, Art, of Lynden, Carolee Besteman of Grand Rapids, Mich., Judith Besteman of Chino, Calif., Beula Horak and husband, Bill, of Ferndale and Bryan Besteman and wife, Monica, of Puyallup; his stepchildren, Andrea Moehle and husband, Allen, Rose Herndon and husband, Gary, Wendy Bognar and husband, Dean, and Bill Ooms and wife, Leslie; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren; and his siblings, Liedewy Macias and Kay Harrison.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jennie Ottevanger and Coba Winters; and one brother, John Besteman.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at 10 a.m. at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside, with funeral services following at 11 a.m. at Sunnyside Christian Reformed Church in Sunnyside.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory may contribute to the Sunnyside Christian School. Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
