RICHLAND - Jacob Rogers, Jordan Esqueda and Gracen Gonzalez all crossed the finish line ahead of the entire Hanford High School boys cross-country team to lead the Sunnyside Grizzlies to a 27-30 Columbia Basin League victory over the Falcons this past Tuesday.
Running on the three-mile Carmichael Middle School course in Richland, Rogers sped to a clocking of 16:46 to lead the Grizzlies in their win over Hanford.
Esqueda finished on Rogers' heels, hitting the tape in a time of 16:50. Gonzalez was only 15 seconds back of Esqueda, recording a time of 17:05.
Hanford's top finisher, Nathan Wallace, recorded a time of 17:07. He led a tight pack of Falcon runners, as Hanford's second through fifth place finishers clocked in between 17:20 and 17:43.
The two Sunnyside runners to close out the Grizzly team scoring were Matt Omlin (17:52) and Patrick Watts (18:33).
In Tuesday's girls race, freshman sensation Erin Hegarty of Hanford toured the three-mile course in 18:55.
"She's a very strong runner," said Sunnyside Coach Robin Bryson.
Hegarty's time was two minutes and 18 seconds quicker than that of Sunnyside's top finisher, Brittany Messmore (21:13).
With Hanford's Haley Tank (19:29), Megan Dart (20:15) and Leilani Anderson (20:52) all finishing ahead of Messmore, the Hanford girls easily rolled to a 16-42 decision over Sunnyside's girls.
Rounding out the scoring for the Lady Grizzly harriers were Jocelyn Yanez (22:26), Lupita Arriaga (22:52), Andrea Salmeron (23:09) and Marlene Manzo (23:42).
Sunnyside's cross-country team is scheduled to compete at the Sunfair Invitational in Yakima this coming Saturday.
